In terms of how the game is played, roulette is the polar opposite of craps, which is a junkie dream. Craps might be all about excitement, yet roulette is all about being dignified and civilized one. Roulette is a slow-paced, soothing, leisurely game, the kind of game you might play while nursing a fine drink and wearing nice clothes.

While roulette might be a mainstay in US casinos, it’s certainly never seen the popularity in the US that it’s seen in Europe too. In terms of table games, roulette consistently makes less money than blackjack, craps, or baccarat, and in some casinos, there is only one roulette table to be found. Part of the reason that roulette hasn’t achieved the same popularity in America as Europe is the difference in rules; European roulette has a house edge of about half of what American roulette may offer.

Modern roulette has been around since at least 1790+, when the game was played in Paris in almost exactly the same form it’s played today. The elements of the game as it is played today were all present then as well: red and black slots in the wheels, numbers of 1 through 36 and a 0 and a 00, etc. In Europe, the 00 was eventually removed, but it’s still a part of the game in the US.

Roulette had its origins in multiple other games. An Italian ball game called biribi was also popular in France in the early 18th century, and it was combined with another wheel game that involved colors but not numbers to make a modern roulette game. Roly-poly was an English game launched in 1730 which consisted of black and white slots. So roulette could possibly be considered a hybrid of both birib and Roly-poly.

The purpose of this site is to explore the game of roulette a bit. Understanding the game is the first step down the road of enjoying a game, and although knowledge of the game won’t change your strategy or your chances of winning, it will increase the amount of pleasure you take away from the tables. It might even help you choose a roulette game with better odds than you might otherwise.

There might be as many different roulette systems as there are roulette players, but most of those systems are just variations of some common (and ancient) systems. These systems for playing roulette all have one thing in common though; they do not change the house edge or the odds in any way. And no betting progression or system will ever change that mathematical fact.

As said, no betting system for the game of roulette will reduce your chances of winning either, so there is no real reason not to use one of those systems. The only harm is if you think a system can change you from a losing player to a winning player, because it just doesn’t work that way. And no one is well served by being deluded, whether it’s a self-delusion or not.

Playing roulette in a land-based casino is not dramatically different from playing the game in an online casino. Many people feel like free online roulette games are pointless, since the whole fun of the game is to have the chance of winning money. We don’t necessarily agree with this line of thinking though. We know lots of people who enjoy playing free roulette in the same way they enjoy playing free slots – it’s just eye candy and a diversion from regular life.

The roulette game costs nothing to play, but you can’t win any money playing either. It also requires no download; as long as you have Macromedia Flash you can play for free right here from your browser.
